Brush strokes

Planning to start another blog where instead of uploading drawings, I'll write about movies. Not really reviews, more like writings of my thoughts about films and pondering what things I find interesting in them. There will be talk about the usual stuff like characters, storytelling and what makes certain scenes so freakin' good in certain movie. Sometimes I might end up talking about film industry in general.

I already have over 10 topics to write about and have started five of them. Not so sure when I'll get the first one ready, since I'll be very busy with other things at the end of the year. I also have to admit that I'm not the fastest writer because I find it sometimes hard to put my thoughts into words. I also have bad habit of re-writing stuff more than necessary. But I surely hope that I will improve and that this whole project will work out!

And here are some quick drawings (10 minutes or less) where I have been testing some rough Photoshop brushes. Love drawing with them!

Swirls

Some sticker designs that I have been making. Planning to print them and give them as souvenirs for few people in December.

Too many birthdays

Birthday cards. Colours may vary from the originals and the lighting isn't the best in all photos. I apologize for that!

There was two more cards but I never managed to take photo of them.

Sininen tiikeri

Blue tigers because I'm out of practice. And because it has been forever since I uploaded anything blue.

Next ones are sketches based on images that I found from google.

Tiny tiger cub in the jungle

I was asked to do some cards long, LONG time ago, so I made... one.

 Some photos of the process..

Here's the finished work of the Green bird

I gave this for my mother as a birthday present. She loves Angry Birds!

Blue and orange

Let's forget for a moment that I have some schoolwork to do and upload some drawings.

We have some variety here. Girls, tigers, birds.. Everything for everyone!

And some digital sketches while watching Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). No, I didn't draw any fan-art.

And now something completely different!

A drunk camel. Because everyone loves drunk camels.

I really have to stop reading Inception and Philosophy: Ideas to Die for. I have started to question my reality because of it.

A break at work

Everytime when I have nothing to do at work (which is very, very rare!), I try to sketch something on my sketchbook. I haven't been able to draw animals for a long time so the sketches are a bit rusty. Most of them are missing life and dynamic poses. I'll work on that next year.

Explanation for the last picture: If you flip the giraffe's face, you will notice that the face looks kinda undeformed. The drawing should always look "right" when you flip it. It's a good way to notice mistakes and try to balance the drawing.

It's refreshing but also strange to see how open the artists are at my workplace. They are curious and more than happy to show their own paintings and sketches. I'm still very shy when it comes showing my sketches to my co-workers. They are so talented that my drawings are nothing compared to theirs. The lineart, the colours, the use of enviroment in their art.. I can't compete with that.

Maybe one day I will be as good as they are. One day..

Coloured paper

I noticed long time ago that I have large amount of multi coloured paper pads. I got them probably five years ago from my father but I never found any use for them. After staring at that pile for a while, I had to do something with them. And this is what I did:

Incredibly simple work. Not my cup of tea but it was good enough for first try.

I wanted to try something more detailed but ended doing this mess. The colours are insane because surprisingly there wasn't as many colours as I wanted.

I realised at this point how important is to plan all the layers when you are working with paper. The shadows give so much life so you better use them well. Next time I will be better!

And of course I had to do two business cards. Sizes are 9 cm x 4 cm if I remember correctly. However, the owl is made with markers.

It was fun to work on these but you seriously have to plan how you are going to build the card and also prepare to work all day.

Felines

Because we all like big cats! Sort of.

A birthday card for my classmate. I tried my best to get the colours right but they still differ from the actual card. Oh well.

Moleskine sketchbook attack!

Oh boy.. I left my other sketchbook at home, so I can only show what sketches I have done on my new sketchbook.

So, here you go! Bunch of sketches that I made during Holidays! These are the ones that I like or at least look enough to be here. Let the madness begin!

Long time ago, I really didn't like to draw animals with human clothing. I don't even know why. But now, after watching Alfred J. Kwak (which is an incredible show!), I don't find it so bad anymore. Okay, sometimes I find it bad but only if it is done horribly.

Took reference from a random google picture.

Umm.. yes. Cats. LOTS OF THEM. Or, at least heads.

 Ignore the silhouettes.

There is two things that I find hard when I am drawing tigers:

1. They always end up looking like lions from The Lion King

2. That fur on the cheeks (or as I like to say, muttonchops).

What on earth is that dolphin doing there?

If this picture only had energy and movement, this would be very nice!

Very quick and poorly done studies.

I didn't use reference when I did this so there are some mistakes.

I really like the flow in this one.

There's something in this giraffe that makes me think of Jafar. It must be the eyes..

It has been a year when I drew this otter character. He/She is from my first animated short.

More otters..

My dog likes to sleep on my mother's shoe.

More!

And more!

I wanted to make a self-portrait but there was too many things going on at the moment, that I couldn't really focus. As a self-portrait this isn't good at all, but if you think it just a random sketch, then.. it is quite alright.

There!
